Football pundit Danny Murphy has now slammed Tottenham’s defensive mentality and professionalism after a mistake-ridden defeat to Wolves.
For all the frustration Tottenham Hotspur fans have felt this season, their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers didn't come as a shock.
So far this season, Spurs supporters have already watched their side lose 17 times in the league this campaign—and, truthfully, they've seen worse.
In fact, even the data-driven projections are gloomy, with one supercomputer tipping Tottenham to collect just seven points from their final six games.
Danny Murphy calls out Tottenham mentality
Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Danny Murphy ripped into the Tottenham squad following their latest capitulation against Wolves.
The former midfielder didn't hold back after mistakes from Guglielmo Vicario and Cristian Romero, saying their errors have become far too frequent while questioning the team’s mentality and professionalism.
He said: “It’s happened too many times this season and it’s not just the same player. It’s a mentality that’s wrong in their defending and their professionalism and their organisation. There are so many aspects.
“It’s why Spurs fans are so frustrated at the moment because one week they might see a half-decent performance, then the next two games they’re all over the place and conceding left, right, and centre.
“It’s been a really bad season. I mean, some of their defending is schoolboy-ish. It was really that bad. Basic stuff. Basic stuff.”
Of course, Murphy isn't the only one fed up with the errors of Spurs players this campaign. Tottenham supporters also turned on Romero after the full-time whistle, with many suggesting his head is already elsewhere amid links to a move away.
Spurs errors keep piling up in miserable season
This Tottenham team have every reason to hang their heads in shame after this campaign.
While Ange Postecoglou is copping a fair bit of stick, Sunday's defeat wasn't entirely on him—Spurs were their own worst enemy, with needless errors again proving costly.
What's damning is that it's become a trend. It's not a one-off anymore; it's who they've been for large stretches of the season.
With Tottenham now just two points above 17th, they're staring down the barrel of one of their worst-ever finishes in the Premier League era.
