BBC Sport reveal that no player in ‘world football’ flew as far to play international matches last season as Tottenham’s Cristian Romero.

Cristian Romero has had a mixed start to the season

Romero has made some unforced errors leading to goals at the start of the campaign, which is quite uncharacteristic of him.

Some may feel that it is down to physical and mental exhaustion, with the centre-back being part of several major tournaments with Argentina over the last couple of years.

Even this summer, the defender played every minute of his nation’s Copa America campaign as the Albicelestes made history by retaining the title they won back in 2021. Romero thus missed most of pre-season with Spurs.

Romero is clocking up his air miles

It has now been revealed by BBC Sport that Romero flew the most distance of any player across the world football over the course of last season.

The centre-back reportedly recorded a distance of 163,000km across his trips as he flew back and forth to South America for international duty.

The 26-year-old played all 90 minutes for Argentina on Thursday as they overcame Chile 3-0 in the World Cup qualifier and he is expected to start again in the clash against Colombia on Tuesday.

Spurs Web Opinion

While this is not ideal, it is the reality of modern football, with the schedule being extremely packed.

It is not fair on the players and this is exactly why UEFA’s decision to add more games to the Champions League and Europa League was extremely negligent.
