Anthony Gordon was in the thick of the action as Newcastle United played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Manchester City at St James’ Park.

Josko Gvardiol showed some fantastic footwork inside the penalty area and gave the champions the lead with a smart finish in the first half.

However, after the interval, the Magpies struck back through Gordon, who won and converted a penalty after being fouled inside the box by Ederson.

The England international delivered an industrious display as a number-nine in the absence of Alexander Isak, who missed the game due to a toe injury.

Eddie Howe was seen barking instructions to him several times throughout the game and the England international had an interesting response when asked what his manager told him.

Gordon usually plays on the left flank but did his reputation no harm as he led the line to good effect against City.

The 23-year-old said his manager urged him to press Ederson higher up the pitch as he was the focal point in attack.

Gordon, to his credit, delivered a spirited showing as he revealed after the game exactly what his manager told him.

"I think, just the way I play a striker, you will see a lot of pressing,” said Gordon after the game to TNT Sports 1.

“Because I am not an out-and-out number nine, I have to sort of play it my way, so you could see him [Eddie Howe] shouting at me to get up and press the keeper, which can be hard at times, but it's just what I have got to do."

He chased a lot of lost causes and did quite well as the leader of the attack in Isak’s absence, emerging as the best-rated Newcastle player on the pitch with a Sofascore rating of 7.6.

Gordon is showing signs of returning to his best after what was a turbulent summer for him and Howe will hope he can keep this up in the coming games.
