Arsenal ran out 1-0 winners over Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League match overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision.
Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off just before half-time for a challenge on Matt Doherty as Wolves broke following a Gunners corner.
Michael Oliver showed the Gunners youngster a straight red card, much to the chagrin and dismay of the Arsenal contingent.
However, Wolves then went down to ten men in wake of Joao Gomes getting a second yellow card for a lunge on Jurrien Timber.
Arsenal fans, incensed by the Lewis-Skelly decision, had a lot to say about Gomes’ sending-off.
Arsenal fans can’t believe Joao Gomes was only shown a second yellow
Gunners supporters were shocked by Oliver’s decision to only show a second yellow card instead of getting a straight red out.
One Arsenal fan wrote on X: “With all due respect to our officials – NOT – how is Myles Lewis-Skelly a straight red for "dangerous play" but only a yellow for Gomes.
“Was a 2nd yellow for Gomes but was worse than MLS red to start with.”
Another said: “Gomes’ second yellow should have been a straight red. Especially after the red card given to Lewis-Skelly for a non-dangerous foul.
“The EPL refereeing standards need to be reviewed.”
The criticism kept coming, with one Arsenal fan writing: “That Gomes challenge is 10x worse than Lewis-Skelly's.”
Another said: “Same challenge that got Lewis-Skelly a red card is what Gomes got a yellow for. Same ref, same match.”
Another added: “Okay so let me get this right. Both the referee and VAR think that the Gomes challenge was less serious than the Lewis-Skelly one.”
What fans of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals made of Lewis-Skelly sending off
In a rare example of a match incident crossing club lines, quite a few fans from some of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals said Lewis-Skelly shouldn’t have been sent off.
For instance, one Liverpool supporter said: “Gonna say it. That was a harsh red for Lewis-Skelly.”
Another wrote: “Never a red btw, Lewis-Skelly should still be on the pitch.”
Meanwhile, a Chelsea fan wrote: “I don’t think that’s a red for Lewis-Skelly, I think that’s harsh.
“He tries to trip him but just gets unlucky where he actually catches him.”
Some Manchester United fans also had their say, with one saying: “Never a red for Lewis-Skelly, absolute disgrace to be fair.”
Another added: “This is never a red card imo for Myles Lewis-Skelly, can understand why Arsenal fans hate the refs so much!”
Meanwhile, a Manchester City fan said: “Lewis-Skelly should not have received a red card on the fixture Wolves vs Arsenal.
“I believe the decision was harsh, and should not have been given.”
