A Sporting Director in Germany has now revealed that Liverpool want to have a look at one of their fringe players in pre-season training this summer.

Arne Slot is seemingly giving every player at Anfield a clean slate as he attempts to pick up where Jurgen Klopp left off, an approach which could finally see a signing from 2019 break into the first-team if he does well.

So, who are Liverpool planning to have a look at? Find out below…

Liverpool plan to “have a look” at Sepp van den Berg

Christian Heidel – Director of Football for Mainz 05 – has now revealed that he’s been trying to sign Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool this summer, but the Reds have decided against entering negotiations immediately.

The 61-year-old told Sky Deutschland: “We are waiting. We have been in contact with Liverpool several times.

“When Liverpool start training, there's no central defender there because they're all away at the European championship and Copa America and then they want to have a look (at him) and take their time.”

Heidel also claimed that he knows Van den Berg – aged 22 – wants to sign for Mainz 05 this summer, adding: “Sepp has made his position clear, he would love to stay at Mainz. We would love to keep him, now Liverpool have to play along. We're giving Liverpool time and we're taking our time.”

The Dutchman has only made four appearances for Liverpool since arriving in a £1.3m deal from PEC Zwolle back in June 2019, but played 36 games in all competitions last season for Mainz 05 – scoring three goals.

Michael Edwards – CEO of Football at Anfield – is seemingly on the lookout for a new central defender to replace Joel Matip, amid interest in Bologna No.5 Riccardo Calafiori and Lille No.15 Leny Yoro.

However, if Van den Berg steps up and shows the ability which convinced Liverpool to sign him in the first place during Slot’s pre-season training this summer, it could end the need to dip into the market.
