Portsmouth midfielder Andre Dozzell sees a contract extension triggered upon confirmation of Pompey’s Championship survival, John Mousinho has confirmed.
Portsmouth had a busy summer transfer window before the start of the 2024/25 Championship campaign. And, despite some hits and misses, Pompey have ensured survival in their first season back in the second-tier.
John Mousinho, his coaching staff, the club hierarchy and players at Fratton Park have all had to navigate some challenging periods, but they have come through the other side a stronger outfit and will be eager to build on this success next season.
Among last summer’s additions was Andre Dozzell, who joined on a free transfer. His arrival was not one that prompted great hype, but he joined as an experienced Championship midfielder and has since become a hugely influential player on the south coast.
Now, to the sure delight of Portsmouth fans, it has been confirmed his stay with the club has been extended.
Speaking to The News, Pompey boss Mousinho revealed that their confirmation of survival triggers an extension in Dozzell’s contract. It is not said how much longer it keeps him onboard for, but it will likely be a year.
“‘Where does staying up leave Andre?,”Portsmouth chief Mousinho asked. To which he replied:
“I think it leaves him as a Portsmouth player for next season!
“Andre has been great, he has surpassed expectations. He has been incredibly effective in any position we’ve played him, whether as a six, an eight, or, a couple of times, as a 10. He has also scored goals recently.
“He’s had a very, very positive influence on us in terms of what we’ve tried to do and played more than 30 games. Andre’s performances have also improved week on week, which is the most pleasing thing.”
Mousinho went on to label Portsmouth man Dozzell’s season as ‘exceptional’, backing him for a key role again when the next campaign comes around.
