It's obvious who Southampton should appoint if Russell Martin leaves this month - opinion

Southampton have made a really poor start to the Premier League campaign since their promotion from the Championship.

The Saints are winless in seven games having picked up just one point from a possible 21 and reside in 19th place.

As such, TBR Football understands Southampton are considering sacking Russell Martin during the international break.

If Martin does depart the South Coasters, there’s one obvious candidate who’d be the perfect fit.

Southampton should appoint Michael Carrick if Russell Martin leaves

Southampton should look to appoint Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick if Martin is dismissed by Dragan Solak.

Since joining Boro in October 2022, Carrick has become widely recognised as one of the best managers in the Championship.

The former Manchester United assistant guided the Teesiders to a fourth-placed finish in his first season in charge, playing a free-flowing brand of football.

Last year was more of a challenge as he lost key players Chuba Akpom and Morgan Rogers but still managed a respectable eight-place finish.

Carrick now has Middlesbrough just a couple of points off the play-offs despite not having the resources of some of their promotion competitors.

His philosophy isn’t too dissimilar to Martin’s, though, he has shown an ability to adapt – something the current Saints boss is reluctant to do.

That will allow him to transition smoothly rather than completely ripping up the style Martin has implemented.

Michael Carrick appointment would be good news for Tyler Dibling and Cameron Archer

Tyler Dibling is arguably the most exciting teenage talent in the Premier League right now.

Dibling is already attracting interest from Tottenham and Manchester United after his sensational displays.

The England youth international would flourish under Carrick’s stewardship as he has a great track record of developing young talent.

Rogers, who is now flourishing at Aston Villa, is the perfect example of that whilst Cameron Archer is another notable case.
