'Keep an eye out': Jamie Carragher says £9m player could be Mo Salah's replacement at Liverpool

As scary as it is, Liverpool may soon have to contemplate life without Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.
Indeed, the Egyptian isn't getting any younger, and his contract is up at the end of the season.
Salah's contract talks are going well, so he could extend his stay at Anfield, but, as of yet, there's been no concrete progression on that front.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also in similar situations at Anfield.
If Salah does leave, Liverpool will have to find a replacement, and speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has been discussing two players who could potentially come to Liverpool to fill that role.

Jamie Carragher suggests Antoine Semenyo could replace Mohamed Salah
Carragher was asked about the idea of Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo coming to Liverpool to replace Mo Salah.
The pundit says he has reservations about Mbeumo due to his expected goals numbers, but he did suggest that the £9m man is one to keep an eye on given Richard Hughes' links to Bournemouth.
"Bryan Mbeumo is someone who has been talked about as a Salah replacement, and we've seen Antoine Semenyo talked about as a Salah replacement as well. If Salah was to leave in the summer, can you see a player from a mid-table Premier League club being used or a superstar?" Carragher was asked.
"I think Liverpool's model is to sign those players who are a bit under the radar. It's not Liverpool might lose Salah let's go and buy a superstar for £120m. I don't think that would be the case. They want the next quality player," Carragher said.
"I think the problem with Mbeumo is this season he's really overperformed his xG, so in some ways, that's a bit of a worry. If someone's overperforming those numbers you know there will be a regression at some stage.
"You mentioned Richard Hughes before, he's going to know Semenyo really well isn't he, so that might be one to keep an eye out on."
Bryan Mbeumo compared to Antoine Semenyo
Semenyo has been linked to Liverpool recently, as has Mbeumo, but if Liverpool had to choose between these two, it's a no-brainer.
Indeed, Mbeumo's stats this season are way better than Semenyo's.
Bryan Mbeumo this season | Antoine Semenyo this season | |
Games | 16 | 15 |
Goals | 10 | 4 |
Assists | 2 | 1 |
As Carragher says, Mbeumo's expected goal numbers aren't the best, but, ultimately, that doesn't matter as he's still finding the net.
Indeed, while Mbeumo's expected goals figures aren't that great, he's not playing 'expected football'. He's scoring for fun this season and he would be a very decent Mohamed Salah replacement.
Of course, the task of replacing Salah is almost impossible. Salah is a Ballon d'Or contender this year after his incredible performances for Liverpool, and replacing arguably the best player in the world is a very difficult task.
Liverpool won't find it easy to replace Salah if he does leave, but if their choice is between Mbeumo and Semenyo, then it shouldn't be too difficult for the Reds to make their mind up.
