Liverpool have it all to do in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final after losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg in North London.

Neither Liverpool nor Tottenham managed to break the deadlock in the first half, though the Reds had more possession, shots and touches in the opposition box.

Spurs then had the ball in the back of the net in the 77th minute, but Dominic Solanke’s goal was chalked off due to offside following a lengthy VAR check.

Liverpool could not make the most of this reprieve, however, as Solanke outmuscled Ibrahima Konate and set up Lucas Bergvall to score a controversial winner in the 86th minute.

Bergvall avoided a second yellow card when he was late in a challenge on Kostas Tsimikas not long before Spurs took the lead.

Several Liverpool players struggled on the night, including the usually impressive Mohamed Salah, which led to fans all saying the same thing on social media.

Liverpool fans say Mohamed Salah should have been rested against Tottenham

Liverpool fans said Salah is being overplayed and needs a break, with one writing: “Salah deserves a rest more than anything, played way too many minutes.”

Another said: “I wouldn't have started Salah tonight, I need him to rest. I can't understand why Chiesa isn't being used in these games. He is well rested and ready to go.”

The comments kept coming, with one saying: “Can we see Chiesa have a game, let Salah rest for the rest of the week.”

Another fan added: “On days like these, Slot should be giving Chiesa some minutes and give Salah some rest at the end of the game, particularly when he is not playing well.”

Others named Salah among other Liverpool players who need a rest, with one writing: “I’m sorry but why is Salah and Virgil playing 90 minutes for Carabao Cup? These guys need to rest!”

Another said: “Many of these players look so knackered.

“Hopefully players like Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Salah get a complete rest on Saturday because it feels like they really need it.

“But we might also need reinforcements, maybe already now in January…”

How the media rated Salah display in Liverpool loss at Tottenham

Liverpool World gave Mohamed Salah a rating of 4 out of 10 for his efforts on the night.

They wrote: ‘Peripheral in the first half but probably had the best chance when he sent a shot wide.

‘Barely involved in the second period bar trying to catch Kinsky off his line on one occasion. Well below the standards he's capable of.’

Likewise, Goal.com went with a 4 out of 10 as they wrote: ‘Having gone close with Liverpool’s first opening of the evening, Salah then failed to wriggle free from the shackles of Djed Spence.

‘A disappointing night for the Ballon d’Or favourite.’
