Since Arsenal learned the extent of Gabriel Jesus' serious knee injury, the club's stance of making a significant addition to their forward line in January seemingly changed.

Arsenal are now expected to add to their firepower up top in some capacity this month, hoping to fuel Mikel Arteta's push for silverware.

Of course, Arteta's side dropped two more points in pursuit of Liverpool who are sat fairly comfortably at the top of the Premier League right now.

Arsenal's attack has predominantly been the issue of late – the likes of Kai Havertz haven't been finishing their chances.

However, it was Arsenal's makeshift back line that let them down against Aston Villa after Havertz had put his side 2-0 ahead, an unfamiliar issue under Arteta.

Arsenal ‘attentive’ to Matheus Cunha situation at Wolves with new contract not signed

That being said, a striker or a winger who can add goals still remains the priority for Arsenal this month.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal aren't quite out of the race for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha just yet.

Cunha is meant to be signing a new Wolves contract, one that won't contain a release clause.

However, the Brazilian is still yet to put pen to paper and Romano posted on X saying that the situation is 'still one to be monitored', mentioning that Arsenal are still 'attentive'.

Romano said: "Matheus Cunha situation, still one to be monitored as Wolves insist to get new deal signed.

"After verbal agreement two weeks ago, there are still final details to clarify in order to sign.

"Arsenal have had Cunha on their list for months, more clubs are also attentive."

Given Cunha's talent and versatility across attacking positions, it is easy to see why Arsenal would be interested, but how feasible a deal would be this month remains to be seen.

Mikel Arteta wanted Matheus Cunha even before he joined Wolves

Understandably, in the midst of a relegation battle under a new manager, Wolves would be loath to lose Cunha.

Arsenal have wanted Cunha for a long time, Arteta's interest is even thought to date back to before the Brazilian joined Wolves for £35m from Atletico Madrid.

And although Romano suggests that the race is still open, it seems unlikely that the Gunners will finally land their man this month, a target they might consider again in the summer.

In terms of January, perhaps Benjamin Sesko could still be an option for Arteta, if the club are able to bring any plans for a move in summer forward six-months.

Sesko rejected Arsenal in the summer, but the north Londoners may be better positioned to convince the Slovenian this time around given their obvious need for a new goalscorer.
