Mikel Arteta needs to do something effective – and fast – as Arsenal watch the 2024/25 campaign somewhat fall apart.

A 1-1 draw against Brighton last time out in Premier League action left the Gunners six points behind Liverpool in the title race, who still have a game in hand.

Then, on Tuesday, Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, giving the Gunners a mountain to climb in the second leg at St James’ Park.

Fortunately for Mikel Arteta, the January transfer window is open for Arsenal to freshen up their squad, and according to Mundo Deportivo in Spain, there are now plans to submit a bid for Ronald Araujo.

Arsenal ready to submit Ronald Araujo bid

The Spanish news outlet now claim that Arsenal want to beat Juventus to the Uruguay international this month.

Araujo – who has a £1bn (£834.6m) release clause written into his contract at Barcelona – is admired by Arteta, with Mundo Deportivo stating that Arsenal are now willing to offer a substantial amount of money to bring the central defender to N5.

The South American is widely considered to be one of the best in his position, although his future in Catalonia remains uncertain with his current contract expiring in June 2026 – which is less than 18 months away.

Mundo Deportivo add that Araujo would be willing to move clubs this month if he is guaranteed regular playing time and a competitive project – Arsenal are said to be aware of this stance, and plan to bid for the Uruguayan now instead of waiting.

In our view, the 25-year-old might struggle to get his wish at the Emirates Stadium despite his talent, with Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba already forming a solid partnership at the back.

TBR Football understand Chelsea also want to sign Araujo from Barcelona.

What Vinicius Junior once said about Ronald Araujo

With Bukayo Saka injured, Arsenal fans would presumably prefer a new attacker rather than another defender, although if a deal for Araujo does materialise, Arteta would be getting the toughest opponent Vinicius Junior has ever faced.

Vinicius admires Araujo, telling Spanish news outlet Sport: “It has to be Araujo, who has defended me best. He is very good and very strong, that’s why he plays for Barca.”

It speaks volumes to hear such lofty praise from the Brazil international – who many felt would win the last Ballon d’Or – so it should come as no surprise to hear that Arteta wants the Barcelona No.4 at Arsenal.
