Ruben Amorim has hinted at what Manchester United fans could expect to see as he makes his managerial debut for the Red Devils against Ipswich.

Amorim was announced as Manchester United head coach on the 1st of November and officially took charge of the squad on the 11th of November after awaiting his work permit following the departure of Erik ten Hag.

The Portuguese head coach had a clear style and set-up during his four-year stint at Sporting Lisbon that saw him bring the club's first title in 19 years and he will be hoping to bring similar success with him during his time in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim comments on what Manchester United fans can expect vs Ipswich

He was quick to give fans an insight into what they can expect from his first game in charge. Amorim told Manchester United: “I think you will see an idea, You could like it or not, I don’t know, but you will see an idea.

“You will see a positioning. You will see something that we want to reach that kind of level. You will feel that.

“We have to know that it’s like two trainings before the first match. This is the best league in the world. But if I have to say something to you, [it’s that] you will see an idea. This I can guarantee.”

Can he put what worked so well in Portugal into practice in the Premier League?

Ruben Amorim’s Sporting Lisbon style

At his time in Lisbon, he often deployed a three-at-the-back system and United supporters have been curious as to whether this is a formation he may look to use with his United squad.

Amorim’s Sporting side played possession-based football and created a high volume of chances through their attacking style. According to WhoScored.com, they boasted hugely superior numbers when it comes to goals from open play and possession.

Average PossessionGoals from open play
Sporting Lisbon 65.8%29
Benfica 60.8%19
Porto 60.2%18
Braga 54.6%11
Famalicao 51.6%9

Amorim’s distinct formation preference also should take shape at Old Trafford.

“A lot of people now talk about the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3 and all that stuff,” Amorim continued to club media.

“But when I think as a player or as a team-mate of Manchester United, it is not a system or formation – it’s like the character of the players, the way they see the club.

“So we have to focus on that before everything [in terms] of how we play, how we press. The most important thing for me, at this moment, is to create the principles, the identity and the character that we had in the past.”

United play Ipswich this Sunday, and the Amorim-era officially begins on the red side of Manchester.
