Tottenham secured passage to the next round of the League Cup with a 2-1 win against Coventry City, and it was a special occasion for James Maddison.

The England international returned to the club where it all started for the playmaker, with Maddison coming through Coventry’s academy in what was to be the first step of the attacking midfielder becoming the superstar he is today.

With Maddison coming off from the bench to help Tottenham secure a late win against the Sky Blues, it was an emotional night for the former Leicester City star, who Tim Sherwood recently criticised for being too safe on the ball.

And Maddison has now left a heartfelt message on social media after last night’s win.

Maddison ‘privileged’ to have come through Coventry after Tottenham win

Taking to Twitter, Maddison posted an emotional message after last night’s win, with the playmaker posting: “Home is where the heart is. I'm so proud and privileged to be a Coventry City academy graduate. As I've got older I've realised how much Coventry actually means to me.

“My place of birth and my whole childhood into early adult life. Was a super special feeling to play in this city again with all my friends and family there (most wanting me to lose.) Good luck for the rest of the season and beyond. Forever grateful Coventry City, PUSB.”

Indeed, any player returning to their boyhood club years down the line is always going to be an emotional affair, as it was for Maddison last night on his return to Coventry eight years after leaving for Norwich City.

And Maddison’s emotional post to the Championship side only goes to show how much Coventry still means for the Tottenham star, with the playmaker now at a stage in his career where he needs to push on if he’s to succeed in north London.

Maddison needs to make this his best year yet in the Premier League

Maddison’s journey to Tottenham has seen the 27-year-old become one of the most feared attacking midfielders in the country, and the playmaker will want to make this year at Tottenham his best year yet in the Premier League.

Last season was a mixed bag for Maddison as the former Coventry star started the year on fire before injuries ruined any sort of momentum the seven-time England international had picked up.

Yet this needs to be used as motivation for Maddison to become the best version of himself this season, with the playmaker aware that he needs to press on if he’s to improve and to become a star for Tottenham.
