Thomas Tuchel has named his first England squad. We have looked at this selection, comparing as well as back on other England managers and their first squad.

Great attention when a new manager picks his first squad. You will always get a few surprises. Dan Burn is of course one to look at, strangely not picked before for full international level. He is 32 years of age. Jack Charlton, Kevin Davies and Chris Powell comes to mind, all getting their debuts close to or in their 30’s.

The squad also have a surprise comeback from Jordan Henderson. Henderson (34) is one very experienced player, being the captain of Ajax, of course having his fantastic past at Liverpool. Marcus Rashford is back, doing well at Aston Villa. Reece James is also back, but no surprise to see him selected.

Gareth Southgate started his tenure as England manager in 2016. First appointed in an interim capacity. His first game was a World Cup qualifier against Malta at Wembley. Daniel Sturrdige and Dele Alli scored the goals in a 2-0 win. Marcus Rashford, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Jordan Henderson were all on the field. They were either starting or coming from the bench in that Gareth Southgate debut game.

Almost 50 years ago, there was a lot of attention. Don Revie picked his first squad for a Euro qualifier vs. Czechoslovakia. He decided to go for a new mix of players. Adding players from the U.23 set up as well as having that depth of experience. Eight of the players failing in the World Cup qualifier vs. Poland are in. Willie Maddren, Gerry Francis, Trevor Francis, Alan Hudson and Dave Thomas are all uncapped. Maddren was never ever capped. Trevor Francis had to wait three years for his full debut. It came in 1977 vs. Holland. Alan Hudson was also an unused sub, having to wait until that fantastic 2-0 win vs. West Germany in February 1975. He played outstanding alongside England captain Alan Ball.

There will always be other opinions when you pick a squad to represent England. This time a few have expressed their surprise not to see Morgan Gibbs-White included. He is a very influntial player in a Forest team having a great season. Trent Alexander Arnold miss this game due to an injury. Two other Liverpool players are in the squad, Jarrel Quansah and Curtis Jones made the cut.

Thomas Tuchel have selected quality and great capacity. He has also considered different type of players, having what is needed of special skills in certain situations. I hope he has got the correct blend. He will hopefully pick a team ready to compete. This squad should have the qualities needed to win these two games.
