Liverpool continued their fine start to the season on Tuesday evening as they thumped Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 in the Champions League.

Arne Slot’s men are top of the Premier League table and now reside at the summit of the Champions League standings, too.

Many were initially tentative about Liverpool’s chances of silverware this season and doubts emerged about whether Slot could continue what Jurgen Klopp had built.

But he’s so far answering his critics emphatically and justifying FSG’s decision to appoint him from Feyenoord.

Before the Dutchman accepted the job, Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso was being heavily linked to make a return to Anfield.

Ultimately, he remained at the German outfit but he was back in Mersyeide this evening and certainly felt the love from Liverpool supporters.

Liverpool fans sung Xabi Alonso’s name

According to Sky Sports reporter Adam Bate, Liverpool fans were heard chanting Xabi Alonso’s name in the stands.

“The Kop are singing Alonso’s name. But what a final half an hour from Slot’s Liverpool. Absolutely overwhelmed Leverkusen after what had been a tight game,” Bate said.

The Leverkusen boss is still adored by the Liverpool faithful after his glittering five-year career as a player between 2004 and 2009.

Alonso was part of the famous side that won the Champions League in Istanbul – netting the all-important equaliser against AC Milan to complete the remarkable comeback.

Xabi Alonso seen touching the Anfield sign

Before walking out of the tunnel and onto the pitch, Alonso was spotted touching the famous Anfield sign, evincing the love he still has for the club.

It’s become pretty clear that one day, the Spaniard is destined to return to Liverpool as a manager and clearly it’d be a popular appointment among fans.

For now, though, fans are just enjoying Slot’s reign, which is going better than anyone could’ve imagined.
