Manchester United has officially announced the appointment of Portuguese manager Rubén Amorim as the replacement for Erik ten Hag, following Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s interim management during the recent games. Born on January 27, 1985, in Lisbon, Amorim was a standout midfielder at Benfica, having also played for Belenenses, Braga , and finishing his career at Al-Wakrah in Qatar.
He featured in 14 matches for the Portuguese national team and boasts an impressive tally of 11 titles: 10 with Benfica and one with Braga, including three domestic league trophies.
Amorim retired from professional football in 2017 at Benfica and kicked off his coaching career at de Lisboa for the 2018/19 season. By January 2019, he had taken over as the manager of Sporting Braga B, and by December of that same year, he was managing the first team, where he notably won the Portuguese League Cup.
The significant breakthrough in his career came in March 2020 when he took the helm at Sporting Club de Lisboa. There, he broke Benfica and ‘s recent hegemony by securing the Primeira Liga title in the 2020/21 season and guiding the Green and White to the Champions League round of 16.
Additionally, that season, he lifted the League Cup and the Portuguese Super Cup. Amorim is considered one of the most promising young coaches in European football. In his short managerial career, Amorim has already claimed six titles: three Portuguese League Cups, two league titles, and one Super cup.
His preferred formation is the 3-4-3, utilizing two wing-backs who constantly push forward and retreat. In the 2023-2024 season, Sporting was the third least scored upon team in the league (conceding just two goals more than Porto’s 27), but they were the highest scorers with 96 goals.

Amorim is known for his communication skills, and tactical knowledge and flexibility. Exuding a positive outlook and a laid-back, conciliatory demeanor, Amorim has consistently emphasized that he refrains from engaging in discussions about referees with the media. Described as being “transparent and straightforward”, he rarely gives interviews outside of his contracted duties and always credits his players for his achievements rather than talking up his own credentials. At Sporting CP, he built a collective spirit that made every player feel like a vital thread in the fabric of the club. Amorim’s approach is rooted in a belief that a squad must function as more than a sum of its parts; it must breathe as one. He treats his players as people first, athletes second. At Sporting, his leadership style fostered a sense of camaraderie that went beyond the locker room; it extended into the lives of his players.
He is married to Maria João Diogo. She is sister-in-law of Antero Henrique, former sporting director of Paris Saint-Germain and responsible for the most expensive transfer ever, the transfer of footballer Neymar to the French football club for €222 million in 2017. Another sister of Maria João Diogo’s, Inês, is married to a former Braga, Sporting CP and Benfica footballer, Luís Filipe. The family is well accointed within the settlement of international football.
Ruben Amorim does have a squad pattern to follow, as he leaves a well working environment behind him at Sporting, managing with skills and pinpointing his sales and signings with a very clever hand. Looking at the Sporting squad, they have the build up you love to see, as it all looks well in place.
The squad is not filled up with players that are far from their expectations and of course having a great number of youngsters below the age of 21, being on the fringe, not having stars sitting in the stands. We would certainly hope he will continue this approach when building his team at Man Utd.
Will be very interesting to follow him and his way of work, but he will probably use this season to fast understand how the hierarchy and squad will look like going forward, excitement for Man Utd fans as they have found a manager that can hopefully set this ship on the correct course.
