Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell’s contract is up this summer but he wants to stay at the London club, he has said.

Millwall have mounted a late push for the play-offs in the second half of the season. After a slow start which had them in the bottom half, the Lions are now just three points adrift of 6th place Coventry City.

Despite their place in the Championship not being set in stone, Alex Neil will be planning for next season. With that comes big decisions to be made over players whose contracts are up at the end of the current campaign.

One of those players is midfielder Billy Mitchell. The club hold an option to extend his contract for a year this summer and Mitchell revealed he hopes to stay at Millwall, speaking to the South London Press.

He said: “It doesn’t come into my head,” he said. “I honestly don’t think about that.

“I know it will get dealt with at some point – and in the way it needs to. I know there is nothing I can really do about it apart from going out there and performing.

“Would I like to be here? Yeah, of course. I look at clubs around us in the Championship and we always have as good a chance as anyone of making the play-offs.”

Mitchell came through the academy at Millwall and has made 166 appearances for the club. He has struggled for game time this season though, managing just 19 games in the Championship.

Could a fresh start be a good move?

After a season ravaged by injury along with an improving Millwall squad, It could be time Mitchell moves on. There is no doubt that he is a good Championship midfielder and he will not be shy of suitors.

The Lions are not short of options in midfield and Mitchell is behind Casper de Norre and George Saville in the pecking order. Those two have been key players for Neil since his arrival earlier this season.

For the good of his career, Mitchell may need to move on. There aree plenty of clubs in the London area who would love to sign such a good player on a free this summer.

What next for Millwall?

With Millwall eyeing up that final play-off spot in the final weeks of the year, they have a tough two games to do so. They face one of the Championship’s form sides, Swansea City, this weekend.

Swansea head to The Den off the back of five straight wins and could leapfrog Millwall with a win. Neil’s side will need their home support to get them over the line in such a tough game.

Millwall may then need to do something no side has done this season to get into the top six. They go to already promoted Burnley on the final day and will likely need to win to have a chance of sneaking a play-off finish.
