Hoffenheim came from behind to level the game twice, but Borussia Dortmund still found a way to win the game.
Borussia Dortmund's hunt for Champions League football is still alive. With four points and a total of three teams separating BVB and a top four spot, there was no room for error heading into this afternoon's game against Hoffenheim. But Dortmund got the job done, winning 3-2 and pulling to within three points of Freiburg in fourth place.
When Pavel Kaderabek headed home Hoffenheim's second of the game a minute into stoppage time, it looked like Dortmund would have to settle for a single point. Given the ground that BVB need to make up and how many others are in the chase for Champions League, this would have been as good as a loss. But BVB fought right to the end, and were rewarded with a 95th minute winner, scored by Waldemar Anton. Hoffenheim have been a bit of a bogey team for Dortmund in recent seasons. Not today!
BVB are now sat sixth in the Bundesliga table. Niko Kovač has done a tremendous job to steer this team back into the European spots. With just three games left in the season, BVB still have a real shot at going one further and snatching a Champions League spot at the death.
Here's our nominations for MOTM in BVB's 3-2 win against Hoffenheim.
Daniel Svensson
The young Swedish full-back was all over the field this afternoon, earning two assists. He had a hand in all of Dortmund's best moments offensively. He got beaten to the header for Hoffenheim's second, but I don't think he was to blame. It was a brilliant performance.
Julian Brandt
Brandt has caught a lot of flack from fans lately. Something he was quick to reference when he celebrated his excellent volley to give BVB a 2-1 lead. I think he's deserved a lot of the criticism he has faced, but his performance today was a perfect response. He was instrumental in Dortmund's first goal and he scored the second. This wasn't Brandt at his very best, but it was still a solid performance.
Serhou Guirassy
When I started drafting this article towards the end of the game, Guirassy's name was not on the list. I thought Guirassy had a good game and did pretty well to get into some good positions throughout the game. Unfortunately, he missed a penalty in the first half, and it looked like it was going to prove costly. Then he grabbed the assist for the winning goal, and Niklas Süle had to make way for BVB's long boy up top.
Waldemar Anton
If you score a vital winner deep into stoppage time in a late chase for Champions League qualification, you get nominated for Man of the Match.
