Two of the U.S. men’s national team’s leading attacking weapons enjoyed goalscoring performances on Saturday in the EFL Championship.
Haji Wright and Brenden Aaronson both scored on Saturday in respective league wins for Coventry City and Leeds United respectively. Both players started and logged impactful shifts for their clubs.
Wright continued his strong run of form by netting for the third-consecutive match for the Sky Blues.
After Bobby Thomas propelled the Sky Blues in front 1-0 at Middlesbrough, Wright extended the visitors lead in the 76th minute. His back-post volley hit the back of the net for a 2-0 Sky Blues lead.
The USMNT forward played distributor on Coventry’s third and final goal of the night. Wright’s through ball pass set up Josh Eccles for a confident finish with nine minutes to play.
The result extended Coventry City’s unbeaten run to three matches, moving them up to 13th in the league standings.
Mark Robins’ men will host Derby County on Wednesday before traveling to first place Sunderland on Nov. 9 for the final match before the international break.
Brenden Aaronson nets fourth goal of season in Leeds United victory
Leeds United’s positive start to the EFL Championship campaign continued Saturday with a 3-0 home triumph over struggling Plymouth Argyle.
Brenden Aaronson capped off a busy first half for the hosts, netting his fourth goal of the league season. The USMNT midfielder logged 66 minutes from the start, helping Daniel Farke’s men move to 7-5-1 in league play.
Leeds United scored all three of its goals before halftime, specifically in an eight-minute spell after the half hour mark. Daniel James and Joel Piroe gave the hosts a two-goal lead before Aaronson added his name to the scoresheet.
His left-footed finish snuck past Daniel Grimshaw for a 3-0 lead that Leeds United would hang on to.
The 24-year-old has remained one of Leeds’ better attacking options this fall since his return from Union Berlin last summer.
Second-place Leeds United travels to Millwall on Wednesday before hosting QPR on Nov. 9.
