Letter: Spoons and forks are to guns what apples are to … you know

Terry Wayman's piece about gun control is so flawed, I'm not sure where to begin, but here goes: Yes, these shootings are human problems — humans with guns. Why is it necessary to own semi-automatic weapons with high-capacity magazines? They're not made for hunting, and if one wants to have fun shooting, perhaps the gun clubs and ranges could rent them. And to make an analogy with cars is hardly comparable: To operate a vehicle requires passing a proficiency test to obtain a license as well as registering the car … which would be great to make the same requirement for gun yes, spoons and forks are not responsible for people being overweight, but that is a personal decision; being a victim is not. And why is it that the standard response of taking a war weapon out of the hands of civilians is taking away the Second Amendment or a "slippery slope" to losing all weapons? Does anyone really think that the same lawmakers who have so vehemently opposed gun control are just going to go away? Really?John Gurr, Salt Lake City
