Nigeria's Boniface suffers setback ahead of WC qualifiers

German champions Bayer Leverkusen have announced that striker Victor Boniface has suffered a setback in his injury rehabilitation.

The Nigeria international has yet to feature for the Bundesliga side since starting for the Super Eagles against Rwanda in November due to a thigh injury.

Leverkusen issued the following statement injury update indicating that Boniface has had a ‘minor setback.’

“Jonas Hofmann, Amine Adli and Victor Boniface are still sidelined,” a club statement read.

“The return of the Nigerian has been delayed due a minor setback in his rehab.

“Winter signing Alejo Sarco was also not on the team sheet as the Argentinian is gradually being introduced to the squad and match action.”

It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will cover in time before Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda in March 2025.
