Sundowns take advantage of Pirates' draw, Chiefs held by City

Mamelodi Sundowns have moved closer to an eighth successive title following a midweek round of Betway Premiership action, while Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Town City.
Wednesday featured a trio of matches, the most notable of which saw Chiefs and City play out a stalemate at the FNB Stadium to continue their iffy campaigns.
For the Amakhosi, the draw means that they have won just once in their last four league outings and remain in eighth place on the log, while the Citizens have now gone nine matches without a win across all competitions.
At the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, Golden Arrows broke a six-game winless streak across all competitions by defeating hosts Polokwane City (who are now winless in seven across league and cup) 1-0, courtesy of a second-half strike from Knox Mutizwa.
And at the Dr. Molemela Stadium, Sekhukhune United defeated Marumo Gallants 2-1 in a match which kicked off late due to a rain delay. Babina Noko's Linda Mntambo and Chibuike Ohizu scored either side of an equaliser from Sede Dion.
The result saw Bahlabane Ba Ntwa remain in the relegation playoff zone, while Babina Noko are flying high in third place.
Tuesday's headline result came from the Lucas Moripe Stadium, as Mamelodi Sundowns defeated AmaZulu FC 2-0 thanks to goals from Peter Shalulile and Arthur Sales.
The victory saw the Brazilians extend their lead at the top of the log to 18 points, as second-placed Orlando Pirates could only draw 0-0 against 10-man Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium.
The Buccaneers have four games in hand on Sundowns, but even assuming a full haul of 12 points from those outstanding fixtures, plus a victory over the reigning champions when the teams meet this coming Sunday, the Soweto side would still be three points off the pace.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Magesi FC claimed a key victory in their survival battle, defeating fellow strugglers Richards Bay 1-0 at the Seshego Stadium thanks to Delano Abrahams's early goal, while SuperSport United slipped ever closer to relegation trouble with a 3-1 defeat away to TS Galaxy.
Dzenan Zajmovic, Keagan Dolly and Thokozani Sibanyoni scored for the Rockets, while Matsatsantsa's consolation strike came from Nyiko Mobbie.
The Betway Premiership continues this weekend with a full round of matches, headlined by Orlando Pirates hosting Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday, 16 March.
