Thorup: Onyeka showed what he is capable of

Augsburg head coach Jess Thorup praised Frank Onyeka for an “outstanding” debut against St Pauli on Sunday after he caught the eye in their 3-1 win at the WWK Arena.

The Nigeria international joined the Bavarians on a season-long loan from Brentford on August 30, but only had two training sessions with his new team-mates after representing his country in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier this month.

Onyeka went straight into the starting line-up for the clash with the Bundesliga newcomers and made an immediate impact when he provided the assist for Phillip Tietz to double Augsburg’s lead on 66 minutes.

Thorup would have loved to see the 26-year-old midfielder get on the scoresheet himself, but was impressed with his first outing in his new surroundings.

“He only trained twice and was involved in the international matches,” the Dane told Kicker. “From the start, he showed us what a good player he is. He is ready to help the team, and that’s what he did today.

“Maybe the only thing missing was the goal at the end, although he had an assist and played very well. For a first game, it was really an outstanding game.”
