Arsenal are waiting on an update from the Italian national team after Riccardo Calafiori suffered an injury scare in the closing stages of the Azzurri’s 2-1 defeat to Germany last night.

The defender lost his footing while trying to twist and change direction, jarring both knees as he hit the turf. It was an awkward fall that required treatment and an immediate substitution.

Calafiori played 90 minutes for Italy tonight in their 2-1 loss to Germany.

He had an awkward slip in 92nd minutes and was taken off the pitch. It doesn’t good on first viewing.

Speaking after the game (via TMW), Italy boss Luciano Spalletti admitted they were still assessing the damage.

"We don't know about Calafiori, his knee feels strange but he can't answer the question of what he feels.

I can't quite figure it out at the moment, unfortunately, his stud came off while he was trying to get back."

Calafiori was later filmed limping through the mixed zone, avoiding questions about his condition.

This is the second time this season he's picked up an injury on international duty. In September, he suffered a calf problem after Ousmane Dembele clattered into him, and later that month, a knee scare against Leicester saw him leave the stadium in a knee support. He's also had further knee and muscular issues in December and January.

Having already endured a career-threatening knee injury as a teenager, it's clearly an area of concern, both physically and mentally. Fingers crossed he’s alright.

Elsewhere, Mikel Merino carried his impressive scoring run on the domestic front into the Nations League.

Arsenal’s auxiliary striker rescued a draw for Spain against Holland with a stoppage-time strike just six minutes after coming off the bench. The 28-year-old pounced in the six-yard box to convert after Nico Williams’ shot was spilt into his path.
