Our first ever game against Oxford at the Kassam Stadium tomorrow will be refereed by James Linington from Newport in the Isle of Wight and it’s no surprise to see him refereeing one of our away games.

This will be his ninth Burnley game but only one, the final home game of the 2013/14 season, has been at Turf Moor. The first of those games was back in January 2009 at Watford. We lost that game 3-0 and the only win we've had with him on the road came on the opening night of the 2022/23 season at Huddersfield.

In those previous games, he's yellow carded thirteen Burnley players, and that includes four in each of our games at Crystal Palace in 2010 and at West Brom two years ago. The only player he's sent off in a Burnley game was Ipswich's Grant Leadbitter, right at the end of their 1-0 Portman Road win against us in March 2012.

That game at Watford in 2009 came in his first season as a Football League referee and was the only game he refereed at Championship level. He started to get more Championship appointments in the following season and eventually became a Select Group 2 referee which has meant that for the last number of years he's been utilised in the Championship and nineteen of his twenty-three games last season were at that level.

He didn't referee a game this season until late August when he took charge of Wimbledon v Ipswich in the League Cup tie. He followed that up by dropping into non-league football to referee the National League game between Oldham and Southend.

He's been back in the league in the last two weeks. He was at Crawley two weeks ago but last week refereed his first Championship game of the season and had to bring the players off in the Coventry v Swansea game because of the heavy rain.

In his four games there have been fifteen yellow cards of which six have gone to home team players and nine to away team players. In that last game at Coventry there were five yellow cards. Former Claret Bobby Thomas and Josh Eccles for Coventry were both carded as were Swansea's Josh Tymon, Goncalo Franco and Jay Fulton.

Fourth official tomorrow is Andrew Kitchen who was promoted to Select Group 2 ahead of this season. He is still to referee a Burnley game.
