Ruud van Nistelrooy has spoken out for the first time since leaving Manchester United following the arrival of Ruben Amorim.
The United legend returned to Old Trafford last summer as assistant manager to Erik ten Hag before becoming interim manager when his fellow Dutchman was sacked in October.
He achieved three wins and a draw in his brief time in charge with some thinking and hoping that new head coach Amorim would include Van Nistelrooy in his coaching staff.
But on Monday, just hours after Amorim arrived at United’s training base in Carrington, the club announced that Van Nistelrooy had left the Red Devils for good.
On Friday, the former striker finally broke his silence on his exit, posting on Instagram: ‘To everyone at Manchester United Football Club, in particular the backroom staff, the players and the fans.
‘I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible efforts and support. It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach and manager, and I will always cherish the memories we have shared together.
‘M.U.F.C will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon – not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it!
‘All the best and take care, Ruud.’
It is no secret that Van Nistelrooy wants to become United manager one day andhad hoped to remain at Old Trafford, but such is he pedigree that he has already been linked with a swift return to the dugout.
The Sun report that Championship side Burnley are interested in hiring the 48-year-old having come close to doing so over the summer before he returned to United.
The Clarets instead appointed Scott Parker to replace Vincent Kompany, with the club currently fourth in the table as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League.
But after winning his first two games 4-1 and 5-0, Parker’s Burnley have scored just nine goals in their last 13 games, with some unhappy over his tactics.
This has reignited their interest in Van Nistelrooy, who has just one season of management with PSV under his belt so far.
In the meantime, Amorim will make his United debut on November 24 when the Red Devils travel to Ipswich Town.
