Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has become the third new signing of the transfer window after completing his move back from Turkish football, joining the Clarets until the end of the season.
Shelvey, whose last English club was Nottingham Forest, has been playing his football in Turkey for Rizespor and Eyupspor since early in the 2023/24 season but prior to that had a lot of experience in English football with six clubs.
It all started for him at Charlton and he made his debut for them way back in April 2008 as a 16-year-old, become their youngest ever player, and in the following season, he netted in a 1-1 FA Cup draw against Norwich to become the club's youngest ever goalscorer.
At the end of the 2009/10 season, having attracted interest from a number of clubs, he signed for Liverpool in a deal worth an initial £1.7 million. He spent three years at Liverpool but during the second of them he moved to Blackpool on loan. This is when he first played against us. We beat Blackpool at home 3-1 with goals from Charlie Austin, Ross Wallace and Marvin Bartley. Shelvey scored a late consolation goal for Blackpool but was fortunate to still be on the pitch after a shocking challenge on Ben Mee that referee Michael Oliver deemed only a yellow.
He has played seven times against us in the Premier League. The first two of those were for Swansea. He'd moved there from Liverpool for a fee of £5 million in the summer of 2013 although those appearances against us came in his second season in South Wales.
His value was forever increasing and after three years at Swansea he moved up to the North East to join Newcastle in a £12 million deal. His time on Tyneside ended in January 2023 with a move to Forest but that didn't work out after an alleged fall out with Steve Cooper. It led to him spending last season on loan at Rizespor before making a permanent move to Turkey last summer with Eyupspor.
To add to his club experience, he also won six caps for England. The first of them came in 2012 when he came on for Michael Carrick in a 5-0 Euro 2016 qualifier against San Marino. He was at Liverpool but when he got his first start, also against San Marino, he became the first Swansea player ever to play for England and was named the man of the match.
Now back in England, the 32-year-old has become a Claret.
