Southampton’s Ben Brereton Díaz returned to Sheffield United on a loan deal in the winter market.

The forward wasn’t able to enjoy regular minutes since joining Southampton permanently last summer. The Saints let him join the Blades on January 20th and the move has clearly paid off for him.

The Chile international has impressed for the Championship club, scoring three goals and registering two assists from 11 games. He won Sheffield United’s Player of the Month for February.

Ben Brereton Díaz’s form for Chris Wilder’s side wasn’t enough to convince Chile manager Ricardo Gareca to include him in the squad for the ongoing international break.

Former Chile wing-back Jean Beausejour spoke to ESPN Chile, where he questioned the national team manager’s decision to drop the Sheffield United player. 24 Horas have relayed his comments.

Beausejour, who represented Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic in England during his playing career, believes the Southampton owned player can contribute to Chile. He’s not pleased with Gareca dropping Ben Brereton Díaz and Flamengo’s Erick Pulgar.

“I was very surprised [with Pulgar’s absence] same as Ben’s non-call-up,” he said.

“They are two names that we can discuss whether they are starters or not, but they have a current situation for when you want to win or hold on, you look at the bench and they are in good form.”

Earlier this month, journalist Juan Cristóbal Guarello stated Gareca dropped Ben Brereton Díaz for personal reasons.
