Chump change

When Jadon Sancho joined Chelsea at the end of the summer transfer window, the expectation of all involved in the move was that he would be joining the Blues for good at the end of the season.

A £25m agreement was thus built into the loan deal as an "obligation", technically conditional on Chelsea finishing at least 14th in the table, but for all intents and purposes, pretty much a future transfer fee.

However, recent reports have made it pretty clear that Chelsea have soured on keeping Sancho beyond this season, even if that fee was looked at as a veritable bargain. The 24-year-old impressed initially, but his production of late has fallen off a cliff, leading Chelsea to "consider" paying a "penalty" instead of the obligatory fee.

This purported get-out clause is apparently not very big either, just £5m in fact, as per The Athletic. We lose more money running for the bus!

Now that's truly a bargain — in essence, it would be a loan fee.
