England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek was rushed to hospital for emergency appendicitis on Sunday just hours before he was due to play for AC Milan.
The midfielder, who previously starred for Chelsea, was expected to be named in the starting XI for Milan’s huge Serie A clash at Napoli on Sunday night.
However, reports from Italy say that he fell ill in the team hotel on Saturday night, suffering severe abdominal pains before being taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
The 29-year-old is now set to undergo surgery to have his appendix removed.
It is a major blow for Loftus-Cheek who was due to start his first match since November having only just returned from a lengthy muscle injury.

Loftus-Cheek came through Chelsea’s academy and would spend nearly two decades at the west London club in total before being sold to Milan in 2023 for a fee of around £16million.
He helped his boyhood team win the Premier League, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup and also spent time on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham.
His form for the former earned him a place in England’s squad for the 2018 World Cup where Gareth Southgate’s side finished fourth.
He has been capped 10 times for his country but his last appearance for the Three Lions was nearly seven years ago.
