"It's time to push on" – Conor Gallagher has big aims after Chelsea exit and first goal

Conor Gallagher has enjoyed a good start since arriving at Atlético Madrid from Chelsea on August 21st.

The midfielder spent over a decade with Chelsea's youth system and made his way into their senior team in 2019. He spent five years with the Blues first team before leaving them for the La Liga side.

On Sunday, the 24-year-old scored his first goal for Atlético in their 3-0 win over Valencia at the Wanda Metropolitano. After the tie, the former Chelsea man spoke to the club's official channels, relayed by Atlético's account on X.

The England international is pleased with life after swapping Chelsea for Diego Simeone's side in the summer window.

"I’m really happy. Really excited. Very proud to play for this football club and get my first goal. My family have been watching and they are happy and proud as well. It’s a really happy day for us," he said.

On scoring his first goal for Los Rojiblancos, Gallagher said: "To get my first goal is a special felling. And to be here at this amazing stadium in front of our fans makes it even more special."

The midfielder was on the pitch for the full game against Los Ches at the weekend. Prior to that, the former Chelsea man last played 90 minutes against Manchester City in April. He now wants to enjoy more minutes and also set goals at Atlético.

“Very tired. I’ve not played 90 minutes for a while. So, it’s really good to play the full game and get my fitness back up to 100% or close to [it]. Hopefully, it’s time to push on and keep performing well," he added.

Conor Gallagher was already a favourite for Atlético Madrid fans, even before he’d played a minute for them.

Now his star is only rising further.
