Chelsea will face KAA Gent in the UEFA Conference League at Stamford Bridge this evening.
Andri Gudjohnsen is in contention to feature for the Belgian side against the west London club. The 22-year-old forward is the son of former Chelsea star, Eidur Gudjohnsen.
Ahead of Gent’s European clash against Chelsea, Gazet van Antwerpen had a detailed chat with Eidur.
The former Iceland international spent six years at Chelsea between 2000 and 2006. He won two titles with the Blues and then moved to Barcelona.
Eidur believes his son should get a good reception from Chelsea supporters on Thursday.
“The older fans will recognise the name, the younger generation will have to read the matchday programme. [laughs] I think the name is always well received. Unless Gent leaves with three points and Andri scores. That wouldn’t go down well,” he said.
The 46-year-old was then quizzed about the Jupiler Pro League chances of securing three points against Chelsea. When responding to that, he heaped praised his former club’s transfer business in the summer window.
"If Gent plays at Stamford Bridge ten times, they will lose eight times,” Eidur explained.
“Chelsea are doing very well. It turns out something good is happening, on the field at least. This summer it was very important that they trimmed the core in order to find a good mix.
“But in a competition, anything is possible. Gent will have to deliver an absolute top performance, and I think that is enough. With a bit of luck there will be a result. It will be nice to see Andri there. But I’m especially looking forward to seeing Ghent’s level against the absolute top. I’m curious."
Chelsea invested over €230m on signing 11 new players, while raised close to €200m from player sales. The Premier League side cut ties with 11 players permanently and let over a dozen players go out on loan.
Enzo Maresca’s side are fourth in the table, two points behind league leaders Liverpool.
