Neal Maupay’s unforgiving dig at Everton on social media provoked a spicy reaction from Toffees fan Tony Bellew.

Maupay joined Everton from Brighton in 2022 but things did not go well for him at Goodison Park, scoring one goal in 32 games in all competitions.

The Frenchman left on loan for Brentford and is now on loan at Marseille, with the French side having an obligation to buy him at the end of the season.

Despite still having a contract with Everton, the 28-year-old is not afraid to make his extremely negative feelings about them known.

The Toffees were beaten 2-0 at home by Nottingham Forest on Sunday and Maupay was well aware of their struggles.

The striker posted on X: ‘Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.’

Passionate Everton fan, and former boxing world champion, Tony Bellew replied in blunt fashion, writing: ‘P***k!’

Maupay riled up Everton fans over the summer when his loan move to Marseille was reported and he replied on X with a scene from The Shawshank Redemption.

The clip showed lead character Andy Dufresne emotionally celebrating his escape from prison, suggesting he was extremely happy to be on his way out of Goodison Park.

On his unveiling as a Marseille player, Maupay said of the post: ”Supporters like to discuss, criticise, and celebrate and it doesn’t bother me because I consider myself a normal person and if everyone can tweet I can do it too.

‘I published a funny little video because my situation at Everton was known, I wanted to leave and the club didn’t want to keep me.

‘So this little video was to say that I was relieved to leave the club.’

Manager Sean Dyche described Maupay as having ‘a real tough run at Everton Football Club’ during his time there.

Since moving to Marseille he has scored two goals in 11 Ligue 1 appearances, with Roberto De Zerbi’s team sitting second in the French top flight.
