It’s still months away, but the summer transfer window has already thrown out an unthinkable rumour that has sent Nottingham Forest fans into a frenzy of confusion.

Forest will look to sign a striker in the summer so Reds fans can expect to see a plethora of names linked with the role in the next few months.

There is an expectation that Forest will move quickly to try and sign Matheus Cunha as Evangelos Marinakis’ top target, but Cunha’s £62.5m release clause will undoubtedly attract plenty of competition for the Brazilian.

Support for Chris Wood is a necessity for the likely European football campaign, which has made the rumours linking Forest to Liverpool’s polarising striker, Darwin Nunez as intriguing as it is hard to comprehend for fans.

Nottingham Forest fans react to rumoured interest in Darwin Nunez

There was some concern about Cunha being one of the Premier League’s laziest players, but the longevity of the rumour makes him seem like the preferred choice, at least until Nunez’s name made the situation a whole lot more confusing.

TEAMtalk have reported that Forest are considering a deal to sign the 25-year-old Uruguayan, leading to Forest fans taking to social media to react to the news.

One Forest fan emphatically said: “No no no absolutely not, no.” Another had another opinion, though, saying: “Under a good manager like Nuno, he'd be great.”

Another Forest fan said: “God I hope this is just his agent stirring it up,” with another saying: “I think he would be excellent for us up top but that's just me.”

One Reds fan added: “We need forwards with a quick first touch, he's the opposite,” while another said: “You know what, I bet Nuno would turn him into a machine.”

A common theme was clearly that if anyone was to make Nunez a clinical striker, it could well be Espirito Santo, especially given that the Liverpool man does have attributes that would impress the Forest manager.

Darwin Nunez could be an interesting project for Nuno Espirito Santo

The Forest squad is blessed with a frighteningly clinical striker in Wood, so the chaos created by Nunez could well be appealing to Espirito Santo.

Darwin Nunez’s chaotic stats this season

Nunez’s goal return isn’t particularly impressive given that he has made 40 appearances for Liverpool this season, but the addition of the assists certainly makes him more impressive.

6.17 touches in the opposition box per game shows that he can get into the correct positions, aided by his 5.15 duels won per 90 minutes. He can also win free kicks for the side, but his weakness in front of goal will remain a concern.

As Wood is injured for Forest’s clash with Brighton, Forest fans will likely see Taiwo Awoniyi up front who has also lacked a cutting-edge in front of goal, something that Marinakis won’t want to see a repeat of if he does sanction a shock move for Nunez.
