Nottingham Forest are now interested in bringing a player back to the club who has already been a fan favourite on Trentside during his career.

The Reds squad will start to take shape in the coming weeks as Nuno Espirito Santo prepares to welcome his players back to pre-season training.

A striker is likely to be on the radar for the Reds before the transfer window closes and now a new name is being linked with a City Ground switch.

The latest link isn’t a new name per se in the eyes of supporters though and it seems Forest fancy signing a former player this summer.

Nottingham Forest want to re-sign Michail Antonio from West Ham

This link comes courtesy of The Sun who believe that Forest are considering a move to sign West Ham goalscorer Michail Antonio.

The Reds signed the player – then a winger – from Sheffield Wednesday for £2.5 million in 2014.

He proved a real hit at Forest and during the 2014/15 campaign, he scored 15 goals and registered 14 assists.

Amid some financial problems the year after, Forest were forced to offload Antonio to West Ham for £7.5 million.

At West Ham, he’s proved a big player at the London Stadium and with 67 Premier League goals, he’s the highest-scoring Hammers player in the Premier League era.

Last season, he scored six times and claimed two assists as West Ham recovered from a poor start to the season to finish ninth.

Now, Julen Lopetegui – previously linked with Forest – is hoping to have a clear-out and it doesn’t seem as though Antonio is part of the plans.

The Reds won’t be the only club interested, with the report claiming that two clubs in America and RB Leipzig also keen.

Forest should tread with caution over Antonio

As romantic as this idea might sound, Forest don’t need to add too many players who are aged 34.

So far this summer, the links have largely been to younger players with profiles of being able to improve and unleash potential.

Antonio doesn’t fit that criteria and it remains to be seen what he’d still be able to offer Forest.

Paulo Di Canio is a big fan of Antonio, calling him ‘extraordinary’ when he broke the club’s Premier League goalscoring record in 2021.

Antonio is unlikely to cost Forest a fortune and as a result, signing him wouldn’t be overly risky from a Forest perspective.
