Alexis Mac Allister reacted to a message from Aston Villa star Emi Martinez ahead of a major occasion for both this week.

The international break could not have come soon enough for the 26-year-old midfielder, after his club Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG and lost the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle on Sunday.

Despite seemingly being on course for a treble or trophies, the Reds will have to make do with only becoming the champions of England, barring a monumental collapse.

Following the disappointment, Mac Allister has jetted off to South America to feature for the reigning world champions, Argentina, against their two greatest rivals.

Argentina are on the brink of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in North America this year, following their 1-0 win against Uruguay on Friday (21 March).

Despite being without Lionel Messi, a goal from Thiago Almada and a fantastic goalkeeping performance from Martinez gave the 2022 World Cup winners the win.

Following the result, the Aston Villa shot-stopper posted a series of images of himself in action to Instagram, captioned: “Esta Seleccion juega con el corazón a descansar que el martes hay una final”.

Which translates to: “This team plays with their heart let’s rest, there’s a final on Tuesday”.

Mac Allister, who put in a strong performance for Argentina, liked the post, showing support for his countryman.

Following the result against Uruguay, a win against historic rivals Brazil on Wednesday (26 March), would secure qualification for La Albiceleste.

Liverpool looking to put disappointing week behind them with focus now on rebuild

Football Insider Verdict

Liverpool have largely been without a true threat this season, as each challenger for their throne atop of the Premier League table has been unable to keep pace.

Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal have all suffered unexpectedly poor seasons, but will surely come back stronger next year.

The true test for Arne Slot now, will be keeping the core of this title-winning side, whilst also rebuilding in the summer.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are able to leave for free this summer and should they all depart, replacing them will be an impossibly tough task.

Convincing at least two of the club legends to remain will be crucial to the Reds’ continued success under the Dutch manager.
