Man City will revisit their deal to sign Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso in the summer as a “back up plan” if they cannot reach an agreement before 3 February.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson insisted that the 24-year-old is likely to cost a “hefty fee”, but City will not shy away from spending big given their comfortable financial situation.

Talks between City and Juventus have been advancing in recent days, with a growing feeling that an agreement will be reached either this month or in the summer.

Cambiaso’s ability to play as a full-back, wing-back, or tucked in to an inverted role has made him a key target for Pep Guardiola’s side.

He can also play on either side of the defence, with both left-back and right-back having been problem positions for City this season amid growing concerns about Kyle Walker’s displays.

Walker’s future has been the subject of plenty of speculation, and reports following his exclusion from the squad during a 2-2 draw with Brentford have now claimed he has asked to leave the club.

Man City make Andrea Cambiaso back-up plan after new twist

City have made rapid progress in the transfer market after agreeing deals to sign Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush, and are now making progress towards more signings.

Robinson has now insisted City still have money to spend and are prepared to step up their efforts to sign Cambiaso – especially if Walker secures a move away from the Etihad this month.

Cambiaso can play at full-back or wing-back,” he told Football Insider.

“I think it will take a decent fee to get him out of Juventus, but Man City aren’t afraid of that.

“We know with their FFP and PSR situation, they’ve got money available to spend.

“He was on loan the season before last at Bologna, now at Juventus where he’s contracted until 2029.

“There’s going to be a hefty fee involved.

“But he’s versatile, an when Pep likes to play with the inverted full-backs in midfield, he can play in that position for them as well.

“Ideally, he’s a full-back, but is quite happy further forward up the pitch or tucked in.

“He’s a good player and could be a good fit at Man City, especially if the Kyle Walker deal does get done.

“If this deal doesn’t get done now, it’s one that they will revisit in the summer as a back up plan.”
