'Another level': Ian Wright names the centre-back who would make Chelsea simply incredible

Things finally seem to be clicking a bit at Chelsea.
The Blues have had to endure a couple of seasons of being in the doldrums, but they're improving now under Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea are far from the finished product, but they're much better than they once were.
This young side still has time to evolve and grow, but in order to do that, they may need some further additions.
Speaking on the Wrighty's House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing what Chelsea need to do in the transfer market, and he says that the Blues need to sign a defensive leader, someone like the player Thiago Silva was in his early 30s.
Chelsea need someone like Thiago Silva
Wright shared his verdict on what Chelsea need.
The pundit claimed that the Blues need a player like Thiago Silva, someone with tons of experience who is still performing at the very top level.
"I think Maresca has shown enough up to this point where he can go into them and say, listen, I need this and this now. Could you imagine that Chelsea side with a 32 year old Thiago Silva now?" Wright said.
"Dude, it’s another level, isn’t it? Bro, we’re talking, that’s for me the profile they need to be looking at, something in that place, you know what I mean?
"That experience coming into that team, it knows he’s coming in as a leader in that dressing room. And let’s face it, you look at that team, and because it feels like it’s got no leaders and everybody’s in and around that kind of age and the top players in the dressing room are quite young and they’ve got their own vibe, you need somebody to come in and say, bro, bro, you need to hold it down a bit."
Who could Chelsea sign?
Wright says that Chelsea need to sign a player like a young Thiago Silva, but these players are not easy to come by.
Thiago Silva was still seen as Chelsea's best player last season at almost 40 years old, and there aren't many players with his quality and ability on the market.
The Blues are looking at younger talents at the moment, Chelsea have been linked with Christantus Uche lately, but, as Wright says, perhaps they need some more grit and experience.
Best centre-backs over the age of 30 | Age |
Virgil van Dijk | 32 |
Antonio Rudiger | 31 |
Mats Hummels | 35 |
David Alaba | 32 |
Stefan de Vrij | 32 |
There are a handful of veteran centre-back options that Chelsea could ultimately go for, but the pool of quality centre-backs with the right level of experience is very thin right now.
Perhaps the Blues should've just kept hold of Thiago Silva as he was still performing at the top level last season.
Chelsea do need some more leadership in this team, and it will be interesting to see if they try to address this issue in the January transfer window.
