Liverpool will be eager to get another win on board as they take on West Ham United in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

So far, the Reds have only stumbled once this season, losing to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, but they have won every other competitive game they’ve contested.

Not only do Liverpool boast a strong team that will hope to compete for silverware this season, but they also have some superb youngsters waiting in the wings.

Now, Arne Slot has spoken about one of the club’s most exciting academy talents, a player who could potentially feature on Wednesday night.

Arne Slot hails Liverpool gem Trey Nyoni

Slot, speaking to the Liverpool media team, sung Trey Nyoni’s praises following his impressive first year at Anfield.

The 17-year-old joined the Reds from Leicester City last year and he has been making waves in the club’s youth setup.

Indeed, Nyoni didn’t go out on loan over the summer, suggesting he could be in line for more first-team minutes after making his debut earlier this year.

Slot said there would be a “fair chance” Nyoni could be involved with Liverpool’s senior if the Under-21s didn’t utilise him in their EFL Trophy game on Tuesday night – and he wasn’t in the squad.

The Liverpool boss was then asked about the youngster’s development, to which he replied: “I think what you say is true, he is a young player – really young, only just became 17, but with a lot of talent.

“He had some impact in pre-season and when he played against Seville he even scored a goal.

“So, a talent but only being a talent is not enough to play on a regular basis for the first team, so we need to keep developing him.

“He needs playing time, he needs playing time to develop and that's why sometimes as a manager you feel like, 'We might need him with the first team' but it's so, so important for him to keep playing his games.

“That's why he played in Milan also with the U19s, because for him to develop he needs to train with us and he needs to keep having his playing time at the highest possible level.

“I think training with the likes of all the midfielders and players we have helps him to develop as well.

“So, we take good care of him and we are aware of the fact he has just became 17 – and that's probably also the reason why people see him as such a talent because he already showed some interesting things at this age.”

Who is Liverpool prodigy Trey Nyoni?

Trey Nyoni is a footballer who plies his trade as a midfielder and joined Liverpool's academy in 2023 after signing from Leicester City.

The 17-year-old made his Liverpool first-team debut on 28 February 2024, coming on as a substitute for Harvey Elliott in the 3-0 FA Cup win against Southampton.

As per GiveMeSport, ‘an aspect of Nyoni’s game that is often highlighted is his balance in possession and ability to receive the ball under pressure.

They continued: ‘His technical ability is impressive, given that he can use both feet and carry the ball effectively past opponents.

‘The strengths of his game complement the number eight role, as he is willing to press off the ball but also dictate the tempo from central areas when his teams have it.

‘His goal against Sevilla also showed his attacking prowess, especially at the sharp end of the pitch.

‘Overall, he is a well-rounded midfielder who has already shown all the necessary traits of an elite player.’
