He made three appearances for Luciano Spalletti’s side in the Euro 2024 group stages and played on the left side of a back three.

Calafiori’s form attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, including Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Arsenal are understood to be in pole position to sign him.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims the Gunners have agreed personal terms with Calafiori.

The Italian has approved a five-year deal worth £3.4million-a-year.

But Arsenal are still yet to strike a deal with his club, Bologna.

Reports in Italy suggested the Serie A side rejected an opening bid from the Gunners worth around £40m.

Bologna originally set a slightly higher price tag of £42m for the defender due to a huge sell-on clause.

They signed him from FC Basel last summer for just £4.2m.

A 50 per cent sell-on clause was agreed, meaning Basel will get half of the transfer fee.

Calafiori made 37 appearances for Bologna last season.

He scored two goals and provided five assists.
