Arsenal have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals after running out 3-2 winners over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

Jean-Philippe Mateta opened the scoring for Crystal Palace in the fourth minute, with Arsenal still trailing come half-time.

However, the Gunners turned the game around as Gabriel Jesus ended his goal drought in style with a superb hat-trick.

Eddie Nketiah gave Palace hope with his 85th-minute effort, but Arsenal hung on to make it to the final four of the competition.

Another big talking point for Arsenal, besides the Jesus hat-trick, was Kieran Tierney’s first appearance since the 2023 Community Shield.

Tierney gave a good account of himself and some Gunners fans noticed what impact his presence made to the whole team.

Arsenal fans say Kieran Tierney helped bring the best out of Leandro Trossard

Arsenal fans noted how giving Tierney freedom allowed the likes of Leandro Trossard to play more centrally, to great effect.

“Arteta has truly allowed Tierney freedom,” wrote one fan.

“He held width with Trossard in the half space which made Merino play like an extra attacker. If he’s fit, he could be a weapon.”

Another said: “Who knew the answer to our LW issue wasn’t Martinelli or Trossard but actually Tierney.”

The praise kept coming, with one writing: “Tierney was good.

“His inclusion as a wide left helped Trossard move more central than usual and almost on Jesus’ toes which is a good thing for overloading the 14 zone. Which could’ve been useful against Everton.

“With the injury crisis hope he stays at least until the summer.”

One fan said: “I’d say Tierney also had a pretty decent game, if he can stay fit might be useful this season given how he’s willing to hug the touch line.

“Saw Trossard in more central spaces, the kind of spaces Martinelli might thrive in.”

Another wrote: “The width provided by Tierney on the left flank seemed to really help Arsenal’s attack after the break.

“It created more space for Trossard and Jesus. Feels like the sort of thing #AFC were missing against Everton and Fulham.”

How the media rated Tierney display v Palace

Football.london gave Tierney a 7 out of 10 rating for his efforts on the night.

“A solid return for the Scot who was simply allowed to play his game – get out wide and whip in crosses straight away,” they wrote.

“Should have had an assist for Sterling. If this is how he bows out at the Emirates Stadium it was a good way to go.”

Likewise, the Evening Standard went with a 7 and wrote: “Started for Arsenal for the first time since May last year.

“Had a good game, overlapping when he could. Created a great chance for Sterling.”

Tierney may well have revived his Arsenal career against Palace and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him.
