Arsenal bounced back from their weekend shock defeat by getting over the line in a 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night.

In an uninspiring encounter at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners took all three points thanks to a 29th-minute own goal from Dmytro Riznyk.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli cut inside in the box and let rip with an effort that cannoned off the post and went in off the Shakhtar goalkeeper.

However, the Gunners also missed several key opportunities, with Leandro Trossard failing to convert a penalty and Gabriel Jesus extending his goal drought.

In the first half, Jesus had the opportunity to score, but Riznyk came to the rescue for the visitors, which extended the Arsenal man’s scoreless run.

Former Arsenal defender Gael Clichy has now given his verdict on Jesus, stressing he’s a good player but needs to do more in the box.

Gael Clichy says Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus needs to be more clinical

"We were talking about Gabriel Jesus before the game, talking about being a big game for him,” Clichy said on Amazon Prime (22/10/2024, 8:53pm).

“That chance he had is probably the reason why he has been talked about a lot.

“He is great, his overall play is fantastic, but in the box, he needs to kill.

“And this chance was for him not to be a hero, but to be open after 24 games without scoring.

“That was a possibility, and I think that's why Arsenal fans want more from him and asking more from him."

Could Mikel Arteta look for a Gabriel Jesus replacement?

Jesus’ all-round play has always been impressive for Arsenal, and it’s not as though he has always been particularly clinical.

Indeed, he did well against Shakhtar, getting on the ball a lot on the right wing and causing the opposition plenty of problems.

However, it’s getting to the point where Arsenal fans, having seen their team develop into a bona fide title challenger, expect more from all of their players.

Considering the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Emile Smith Rowe and Kieran Tierney have all moved on despite being perfectly good Premier League players, it remains to be seen whether Arteta may look to find an upgrade on Jesus next year.
