'Arsenal have misled fans over financial restrictions' - finance expert
Today at 10:52 AM
Arsenal are not restricted in the transfer windowand the narrative that they are stems from fans being "misled" by the club, according to Stefan Borson.
The finance expert took to X on 11 January to respond to an Arsenal fan comparing the wage bills of Manchester City and Liverpool to the Gunners'.
Borson explained that the club is not facing as much financial difficulty as some fans might believe.
He said: "Arsenal wages will be around 30% higher for 23/24 when imminently published (first look will be the Deloitte report in the next few days).
“The narrative that Arsenal are some restricted, PSR-restrained club is a message to mislead their fans. Simply, the owners’ choice.”
Arsenal need to go back in the market to save their season
Football Insider opinion
Despite Arsenal’s wages being 30% higher, the club is already looking to reduce costs by offloading Thomas Partey.
The Gunners have made no moves in the transfer window so far. This is despite fans urging the club to sign a forward amid ongoing struggles in attack.
One name that consistently emerges is Alexander Isak, with Arsenal prioritising him as their summer target.
However, reports suggest the club may not be able to afford his transfer fee. It is expected to break the British transfer record [The Daily Mail].
This could be the "narrative" Borson referred to. The club aren't as constrained by profit and sustainability rules as other clubs. A major signing, including a forward or winger to cover for the injured Bukayo Saka, shouldn't be out of reach.
In the summer, the club signed only three players with a transfer fee: Mikel Merino, Riccardo Calafiori, and David Raya, with Raheem Sterling joining on loan. Strengthening the forward line is now crucial if they are to revive their season.
In other news, Arsenal scouts have been closely watching this Premier League left-back.
