Arsenal legend Alan Smith tried to cheekily one up Harry Kane after he equalled his incredible Champions League record with Bayern Munich.

Kane netted four goals in Bayern’s 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night, with three of those coming from the penalty spot.

His goals from 12 yards made him the first player to net a hat-trick of penalties during a European Cup or Champions League match.

As well as this, Kane is the first Englishman to score four goals in the illustrious competition since Smith in 1991.

The former striker did so for Arsenal in their 6-1 win over Austria Wien, although the ex-Gunner pointed out one key difference.

When responding to Kane’s statistics on X, in which he was tagged, he cheekily said with a wink emoji: “I didn't need penalties though.”

Smith’s four goals was all he netted in the then European Cup, although he did add a further three to his European tally in the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Kane on the other hand now has 57 goals to his name in all European competitions, including qualifying matches, across his spells at Tottenham and Bayern.

Most notably though, the England captain has reached the 33 goal mark in the Champions League, the joint-25th highest tally ever with Fernando Morientes.

His strikes against Dinamo Zagreb have seen him overtake Wayne Rooney’s 30 in the all-time scoring list, doing so in 40 games less.

Speaking on this particular feat to Amazon Prime Video, Kane said: “Whenever you're in a conversation with Wayne Rooney, it means you're doing something well.

"He's one of the greatest English players and one of the best players there was in the game. It's a nice achievement."

He added: “It's the first time I've ever had three penalties in one game. It was a different feeling for me, but to score four goals is fantastic.

"To help the team in any way possible is important. Whether they're penalties or normal finishes, I'll take them all. It was a great night for us."

Should Kane score in Bayern’s next Champions League match, away at Aston Villa on October 2, he will sit level with club legend Gerd Muller on 34 competition goals.

His overall goal tally for Bayern currently sits at an incredible 53 in 50 appearances across all competitions.

Hat-tricks have come in six of those outings, with the 31-year-old still well and truly one of the greatest strikers on the planet.
