Amid Newcastle United's struggles with PSR this summer, Liverpool showed a strong interest in signing England international Anthony Gordon.

Under Eddie Howe's guidance, Gordon has shone for Newcastle since making the move from Everton, a 23-year-old who promises to only get better.

Instead of Gordon, who was seemingly discussed as a possible solution, Newcastle instead sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in the summer – two talents now thriving elsewhere in the Premier League.

That being said, Newcastle are now establishing a plan to deter the likes of Liverpool from trying to sign Gordon again in the future.

TBR Football understands that Newcastle now want to sit down with Gordon and try to agree terms over a new contract.

Newcastle keen for Anthony Gordon to sign a new contract amid Liverpool interest

Right now, Newcastle are already in talks with Alexander Isak, discussions are ongoing with the striker who could become the club's highest paid player.

Isak aside, Newcastle are also keen to try and finalise terms with Gordon, whose stock is rising all of the time.

As mentioned, Howe's side turned down an approach from Liverpool in the summer, but that hasn't deterred interest on Merseyside.

Liverpool remain fully focused on signing the England winger in the future, who has started both games under Lee Carsley thus far.

Gordon's current deal expires in 2026 and Newcastle are aware of the haste to agree new terms.

The winger will have just 12-months remaining on his current contract next summer, a situation Paul Mitchell will want to avoid.

That being said, it remains to be seen whether Gordon would be open to agreeing to an extension at this point.

Howe might need to use Gordon as a striker

Of course, Gordon demonstrated another string to his bow in the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on the weekend, playing as a striker in the second half.

Isak needed to come off and Gordon was entrusted to play centrally.

Newcastle don't believe that William Osula is ready just yet, despite the considerable fee they paid for the striker this summer.

And given that Newcastle will still be missing Callum Wilson for the foreseeable future too, there's a chance Gordon might continue to get chances as a striker.

Of course, from a Liverpool perspective, this might only increase their interest further.
