Everton are plotting a move to sign a replacement for Michael Keane in the summer transfer window as a result of his inconsistent performances.

Keane, 32, has been earmarked as a potential departure for Everton this summer as his current contract is set to expire in June, with no talks taking place about a new deal.

The Toffees have now turned their attention towards the transfer market to identify a potential replacement who could challenge James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite.

Meanwhile, it has been suggested that even if Keane stays beyond the end of the season, David Moyes‘ side will look to strengthen their defensive options.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, 27, has emerged as an option for Everton.

His performances so far this season both in the SPFL and the Champions League have caught the eye of the Toffees’ recruitment staff and a return to the Premier League is now on the cards.

Everton plot move to sign Celtic star Cameron Carter-Vickers

Football Insider revealed on 14 March that Celtic are concerned about losing Carter-Vickers amid growing interest from Premier League clubs.

However, they are set to demand big money for their star centre-back, who signed from Tottenham for £6million in 2024, as his current contract is set to run until 2029.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider, Robinson explained that Everton are targeting Carter-Vickers who has been identified as a good fit for Moyes’ side as he would be prepared to rival Tarkowski and Branthwaite for a starting role.

I don’t think there’s a real need to replace James Tarkowski,” he told Football Insider.

“The issue they’ve had at Everton is Michael Keane.

“His form has been up and down this season, so there’s an opportunity there to replace him if he does move on this summer.

“Carter-Vickers, you can see the quality he’s got, he’s played well this season, specifically in the Champions League.

“If Michael Keane moves on the gap opens up for Everton to rebuild.

“But if Keane is happy with his role as a bit-part player, he’s not going to be challenging the first-choice centre-backs.

“Cameron Carter-Vickers would fit that mould and I can certainly see him making a return to the Premier League.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure contract updates

As Keane’s contract at Everton is set to expire in June, he could be one of eight players to walk away from Goodison Park at the end of the season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the most high-profile player whose contract will run out at the end of the season amid interest from Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 10 March that Everton are set to negotiate with Abdoulaye Doucoure after decided against triggering their option to extend his deal.

As things stand, the midfielder will leave the club when his contract expires, but sources say a new deal on reduced wages cannot be ruled out given his importance to the side.
