Real Betis have 'maintained informal contacts' with Tottenham midfielder Giovanni Lo Celso about a move back to the club this summer.

That's according to Estadio Deportivo, who say the club's plan is to play the long game with the Argentine, believing time will be their ally in their hopes of getting him back.

The newspaper explains that while Lo Celso has been given priority status in terms of transfer targets, and there is a deal there to be done as he enters the final year of his contract at Tottenham, Betis are yet to truly push ahead.

That's because, as has been reported elsewhere, they can only truly move for Lo Celso if other players in the squad leave first.

So those in charge of the club have publically played down any rumours or talk of a move for now, hoping to maintain a calm image on the surface while work goes on underneath.

They've maintained informal contact with the Tottenham midfielder, making it clear they'd be delighted to have him back. He, in turn, is not opposed to return to his former club either.

The big advantage Betis want to play on is the fact his contract with Spurs expires next summer. The Spanish side want to 'play the days', hoping Tottenham get more desperate later in the window and agree to a more favourable deal to avoid potentially losing Lo Celso on a free next year.

He would be free to negotiate with sides in Europe from January 1st about a free transfer next summer and Betis want to use that, believing time is on their side.

Thus, they are delaying making their move, hoping to use the time to secure a big sale, perhaps Nabil Fekir, and open up space in the budget to facilitate the deal for Lo Celso later in the summer.
