Corberan to Southampton: 'Disrespectful' West Brom update confirmed after Wolves
Yesterday at 12:32 PM
Carlos Corberan says it would be “disrespectful” to West Brom for him to talk about links to the vacant managerial role at Southampton.
The Baggies boss recently played down links with another Premier League club, Wolves, by insisting he remained focused on his own side’s next game in the Championship.
While the Old Gold have since found a new manager in Vitor Pereira, discussions continue to surround the 41-year-old.
Football Insider understands that Corberan is one of the top contenders to take over at Southampton after they sacked Russell Martin on Sunday (15 December).
However, the Spaniard was even more emphatic in his response when questioned about those links, as he said, via Express and Star: “For me it is disrespectful for this great club and our amazing fans to be talking about something that is not related to West Bromwich Albion.
“Sometimes I feel that if you cut (my comments) to say ‘I only focus on the game’ and I don’t talk about anything else – there can be speculation about this!
“I can only tell you that my full focus is to prepare the next game and I don’t like that our fans or anyone else at this club can feel any type of disrespect with all of these rumours that can appear.
“I am clear on this, so I am going to speak about Bristol, about what we are going to do in the club, that I can control, because there are things I cannot control and I cannot talk about things I cannot control.”

Football Insider Opinion
It is likely that some Saints supporters will be rather pleased by the fact that Corberan appears to be distancing himself from a move to St Mary’s here.
The response among the Southampton fanbase on social media to the suggestion that the Spaniard is a contender for the role appears to be far from positive for the most part.
Given West Brom have drawn ten of their last 13 games in the Championship, Corberan is not exactly in the finest of managerial form at the moment, even if he has been operating under far from ideal circumstances for a long time.
That struggle to find wins for his side would seemingly not bode well for any chance the Saints might need of winning promotion next season, let alone staying up during the current campaign.
Indeed, it does appear as though there are also other options out there who may be more appealing choices for Southampton.
When combining that with Corberan’s comments here, those making the decisions at St Mary’s will surely have to think long and hard about making a genuine move for the West Brom boss, although he still hasn’t actually ruled it out.
In other news, Man United and Newcastle are racing to sign a Southampton player.
