Cristiano Ronaldo could join some huge names should he pen a spectacular new deal at Al Nassr.

According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, the Portuguese superstar has opened talks with his current side over a new contract that would see him continue at the club at least until the 2026 World Cup.

Ronaldo has been vocal about his ambitions to represent his country in the showpiece event, with its next instalment being hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Should he take part, he would become the first player to feature in six different editions of the World Cup, and Schira has confirmed that plans now appear to be in place to make the incredible feat happen.

Schira wrote on X: “Al Nassr have opened talks to extend Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract, which expires in June.

“Ronaldo would like to play the World Cup 2026. If he plays in 2026, he will make an historic record, becoming the first player in 6 different World Cup editions.”

Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in December 2022 after his high-profile exit from Manchester United, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal rumoured to be worth $200million per year.

With his current contract set to expire in June 2025, an extension would likely see the 39-year-old pocket a similarly eye-watering sum of money.

This would place him among other huge figures in the sporting world who have continued to earn big in their latter years.

Basketball icon LeBron James recently penned a two-year, $104 million-a-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers at the age of 39.

Meanwhile, undefeated former boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather has remained one of the world’s highest paid athletes despite retiring from professional sport in 2017.

Mayweather is one of the richest athletes to ever grace the planet, with an approximate net worth of around $450million [£344m], and career earnings in excess of $1.1billion [£841m].

A contract extension for Ronaldo would see him continue playing until he is at least 41, and he has previously revealed that when he does retire, it is likely to be with Al Nassr.

Speaking to Portuguese TV channel NOW, he said: “I don’t know if I will retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will retire here at Al-Nassr.

“I’m happy at this club, I feel good in this country too. I’m happy to play in Saudi Arabia and I want to continue.”

Despite being in the twilight stage of his career, Ronaldo has shown no signs of slowing down.

Last season he received the SPL Golden Boot award after comfortably topping the goalscoring charts.

His 35 goals were seven more than his nearest competition in ex-Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, and also saw him become the highest single-season goalscorer in the league’s history.

And he has started the new campaign in similarly devastating fashion, netting four times in his opening five games.

This form has also translated across to the international stage, with Ronaldo scoring in each of his last two games for Portugal in Nations League wins over Croatia and Scotland.

His strike against the former saw him record a staggering 900th career goal, making him the first man in history to reach the astonishing figure.

But the Portugal skipper will certainly not be satisfied with retiring just yet, having previously revealed to former Man United teammate Rio Ferdinand his ultimate goal of hitting the 1,00-goal mark before the end of his playing days.

He also claimed that he would be able to hit the figure in under two years should he remain injury free.

With Ronaldo already the all-time record goalscorer in football history with 903 goals to his name, a new contract at Al Nassr would allow him to focus on landing all of his coveted records.
