Declan Rice sends two-word message to 'world class' forward who's been linked with Arsenal

Alongside Bukayo Saka, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice certainly didn't disappoint for England against Switzerland on Saturday.

The Arsenal pair were both crucial to ensuring England's safe progression – with the nation owing a lot to Saka.

Arsenal fans are very familiar with that kind of strike from the 22-year-old by this point, cutting onto his left foot.

But to deliver such a strike in that scenario, on that stage, was truly special.

That being said, Rice also played a vital role in the middle, knitting together attack and defence with his usual energy and verve.

Whether it's alongside the impressive Kobbie Mainoo or any substitute entering the fold, Rice is the rock of this England team – fully appreciated by his manager Gareth Southgate.

That being said, Southgate has now begun to rely on his wider squad throughout the tournament, handing significant roles to the likes of Ivan Toney late on in games.

Previously it would have been unthinkable for Harry Kane to be subbed, but Toney again replaced England's all-time leading scorer before the penalty shoot-out.

Declan Rice says Arsenal target Ivan Toney is ‘the coldest’ after England penalty

As was expected (or hoped), Toney dispatched his penalty with typical composure – perhaps showing the mentality that Arsenal once found so attractive.

And despite some reports that Arsenal's interest in Toney has waned, it still doesn't seem impossible that Mikel Arteta's side could launch a move for the 'world class' striker.

At least, that appears to be what Rice would choose to do were he in charge of Arsenal's recruitment team this summer.

Rice is incredibly close with Toney – leading to him sending the Brentford striker a two-word message on Instagram after England's dramatic win.

Posting on his story, the Arsenal midfielder simply wrote: "The coldest" whilst uploading a photo of the striker.

Of course, it is interesting to consider whether Arsenal would one day regret not pursuing their initial interest in Toney, who at 28-years-old would be ready to contribute immediately.

Niclas Fullkrug combined so effectively with Kai Havertz at Euro 2024 for Germany, demonstrating how the Arsenal man can benefit from a stylistic alternative.

And in Toney, Arsenal would have a natural goalscorer, someone who can make the difference as a substitute or a starter.

That being said, Theo Walcott has just shared his verdict on Saka's performance for England vs Switzerland
